Hydrocharis laevigata, also known as Amazon Frogbit or West Indian Spongeplant, is a floating aquatic plant native to South America that has become an invasive species in many parts of the world. It is often introduced through the aquarium trade and can form dense mats that disrupt aquatic ecosystems and human activities. The plant is highly adaptable, can reproduce both sexually and vegetatively, and thrives in warm, nutrient-rich waters.

Care:

Lighting:
Moderate to High Light: Frogbit requires more light than many other beginner floating plants to thrive.

Avoid Burn: Use a light source with moderate intensity and ensure it‘s not too close to the plant to prevent burning.

Duration: A lighting duration of 7 to 12 hours per day is generally recommended.
Water & Environment
Temperature: Keep the water temperature between 18–26°C (64–80°F).

Hardness & pH: Frogbit does best in soft to moderately hard water (0-12°GH) with a pH between 6.0–7.5.

Stable Conditions: Maintaining consistent water parameters, temperature, and lighting is more important than achieving perfect, fluctuating conditions.

Nutrients
Supplementation: Use a liquid aquarium fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to provide essential nutrients.

Root Absorption: Frogbit primarily absorbs nutrients through its long, dangling roots.
Water Movement & Moisture
Slow Surface Agitation: Avoid strong water currents from filters, as they can break the delicate roots. Using a sponge filter can help.

Keep Tops Dry: Water droplets or condensation falling on the leaves can cause them to yellow, rot, or deteriorate.

Maintenance & Propagation
Pruning: Regularly remove older, yellowing leaves and stems to promote healthier growth.
Propagation: Frogbit propagates easily via runners; it is best to let new plantlets stay attached to the parent plant to share nutrients and grow bigger.
