Anubias barteri var. nana, or Anubias Nana, is a popular, hardy, and slow-growing aquatic plant known for its dark green, leathery leaves and ease of care, making it ideal for beginners. It‘s an epiphyte that grows best when attached to hardscape like rocks or driftwood, as burying its rhizome will cause it to rot. Anubias Nana prefers low to medium light, does not require CO2, and can be propagated by splitting its rhizome.

Care & Placement

Light: Low to medium light is preferred; high light can lead to algae growth on the leaves.
Substrate: Do not bury the rhizome (the thick, horizontal stem) in the substrate. Instead, attach the plant to aquarium decor like rocks or driftwood using fishing line or superglue.
Water Parameters: It‘s adaptable to a wide range of water conditions but thrives in slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Fertilization: While not strictly necessary, regular liquid fertilization can promote faster growth and more robust leaves.

CO2: CO2 injection is not required but can be beneficial for faster growth.

Growth & Propagation

Growth Rate: Anubias Nana is a slow-growing plant.

Propagation: To propagate, simply cut or pull apart the rhizome and reattach the new portions to hardscape.

Benefits

Hardy: Its tough, waxy leaves make it resistant to damage from boisterous fish.

Versatile: It can be used in both aquariums and terrariums, in the foreground or midground.
Aesthetic: It adds a natural and mature look to an aquascape.
